WHAT IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
The Church of Christ is the body of Christ here on this earth, (Eph. 1; 22-23 Col. 1; 18). It was built and paid for by Jesus Christ (Matt. 16; 13-19 Acts 20; 28). Jesus is its only foundation (1Cor. 3; 11). Each congregation is Autonomous , that is free and independent of any general hierarchy having elders or leaders to establish within each congregation the demands of the word of God and to oversee the affairs of the church. Even though they have no central office they are united in a common faith and voluntarily cooperate in mission and evangelistic efforts and in doing benevolent work under the direction of the local church.
Membership into the church depends on :
Hearing the word of God ( Romans 10;17 Heb. 11;6 )
Believing the word of God. ( Romans 10;10 Mark 16;16 )
Repenting of ones sins ( Luke 13;3,5 Acts 17;30 Acts 2;38 )
Confession of belief in Jesus (Romans 10; 10 Acts 8; 37)
Baptism into Christ (Mark 16; 16 Acts 2; 38 1 Pet. 3; 21 Acts 22; 16 Gal. 3; 27 Rom. 6; 3-5 2 Thess. 1; 7-9)
The Church of Christ rejects all party names, creeds, and organizations, that have the capability of dividing the body of Christ. (1Cor. 1; 10-13). In Christendom the Churches of Christ’s plead for the unity of all believers on the basis of the Bible alone, using the Bible as our only guide and law.
The purpose of this directory is to provide a detailed listing as well as providing as much information about the church as we can to make it easier for you to locate on your travels
This by no means is a complete list as it is continuously being added to and updated.
The congregations in this list all would be partakers of the one cup of unfermented wine and unleavened, unbroken bread in the communion. The music of the worship service would be a cappella which is singing without the use of instruments. The congregations in this listing also do not believe in divorce and remarriage for any cause. They would not have Sunday School class system of teaching , nor approve of women speaking in the assembly
These Churches of Christ believe that there are five items of worship which must be observed every first day of the week. (Acts 20; 7 – Heb. 10; 25) These items or areas of worship are:
Congregational Singing (Eph. 5:19 –Col. 3; 16)
Offerings of prayer – (Acts 2; 42 – 1Tim. 2; 1-2)
Reading and teaching of Gods Word. – (1cor. 14; 15-27 – Acts 20; 7 – 2 Tim. 2; 2)
The observance of the Lord’s Supper (Acts 20; 7 – 1Cor. 11; 20-32)
The collection of the saints. (1Cor. 16; 1-2 – 2 Cor. 9; 7)
The order in which these items are carried out may vary from congregation to congregation.
When traveling to any of these churches it must be realized that they have the liberty to change the times of their services and it may be that they have not made us aware of the changes, so it is best if you call ahead and obtain the current information before going.
As a disclaimer we do not want to imply that this is a complete list of all the congregations that are in good standing with God or in the brotherhood or that we all agree on personal issues that face us as Christians. If you have questions regarding what a congregation stands for as far as moral issues it is best for you to contact them in person and get first hand information so as your mind can be satisfied.
The members of the Church of Christ believe that Christ is still the head of the church thus deserving recognition as the owner /purchaser of this great institution. We believe that he is still able to meet the needs of man completely, without adding to or taking from his message found in the Bible. This is why we are seeking to establish New Testament Christianity in its original form. Thus we believe the Bible only to be our guide in matters of worship, daily living and acceptability to God. If we were to follow the doctrine and commandments of men our worship would be vain (Matt. 15; 9) We are people who wear the name "Christian" only this name being given of God to his followers at Antioch for the first time (Acts 11; 26) In today’s world many people have chosen to wear other names and follow man-made practices. But we the Church of Christ has chosen to follow Christ and to wear his name only (Rom. 16; 16 1 Cor.11; 1)
WE WOULD INVITE YOU TO ATTEND ANY OF THESE CONGREGATIONS LISTED, AS IT WOULD BE A BLESSING TO YOU AND THE CONGREGATION BLESSED BY YOUR PRESENCE.
